Storage system and article retrieving method

A storage system, comprising:

• a raised platform (102) above a base surface (160);
• a plurality of vertical columns directly or indirectly attached to the base surface;
• a support bar (120) extending a distance away from the columns to define a support surface for pallets on the raised platform (102);
• and
• horizontal bars extending between and directly connecting the support bar (120) and a respective column for supporting pallets thereon,
• wherein the support bar and horizontal bars are configured to completely support a pallet thereon between the support bar and horizontal bars,
• a distance between the base surface and the support bar forms a space configured to extend a reach of a worker,
• the horizontal bars have a longitudinal axis extending in a direction directly from the support bar (120) to the respective column, and
• the distance between the base surface and the support bar is 1-15 inches.
