Abstract
Methods of powering a radio that is mounted on a tower of a cellular base station are provided in which a direct current (“DC”) power signal is provided to the radio over a power cable and a voltage level of the output of the power supply is adjusted so as to provide a substantially constant voltage at a first end of the power cable that is remote from the power supply. Related cellular base stations and programmable power supplies are also provided.
Claims14
An apparatus, comprising:
- measurement circuitry configured to measure a voltage at a first end, on a mounting structure, of a cable electrically coupled to a radio on the mounting structure;
- transmitter circuitry configured to transmit the measured voltage to power supply circuitry electrically coupled to a second end of the cable and which is configured to determine and generate an output voltage that results in a resulting voltage at the first end that is at a predetermined level or within a predetermined range regardless of current drawn through the cable;
- wherein the measurement circuitry is further configured to measure the resulting voltage,
- wherein the measurement circuitry is communicatively coupled to the transmitter circuitry;
- and
- wherein the measurement circuitry and the transmitter circuitry are further configured to be mounted on the mounting structure.

A method, comprising:
- measuring a voltage at a first end, on a mounting structure, of a cable electrically coupled to a radio on the mounting structure;
- and
- transmitting the measured voltage to power supply circuitry connected to a second end of the cable and which determines and generates an output voltage at the second end that results in a resulting voltage at the first end of the cable that is at a predetermined level or within a predetermined range regardless of current drawn through the cable;
- and
- measuring the resulting voltage.

A system, comprising:
- a mounting structure;
- a radio mounted on the mounting structure;
- power supply circuitry;
- a cable comprising a first end and a second end, wherein the first end is opposite the second end, wherein the first end is electrically coupled to the radio, wherein the first end is on the mounting structure, and wherein the second end is electrically coupled to the power supply circuitry;
- measurement circuitry configured to measure a voltage at the first end of the cable;
- transmitter circuitry configured to transmit the measured voltage to the power supply circuitry;
- wherein the power supply circuitry is configured to determine and generate an output voltage that results in a resulting voltage at the first end of the cable that is at a predetermined level or within a predetermined range regardless of current drawn through the cable;
- wherein the measurement circuitry is further configured to measure the resulting voltage;
- wherein the measurement circuitry is communicatively coupled to the transmitter circuitry;
- and
- wherein the measurement circuitry and the transmitter circuitry are further configured to be mounted on the mounting structure.
