Abstract
A medical implant comprising a plurality of fiber bundles, each bundle comprising a polymer and a plurality of uni-directionally aligned continuous reinforcement fibers.
Claims41
A medical implant, comprising one or more reinforcing fiber bundles, each fiber bundle having an axis, comprising a plurality of fibers aligned along the axis of the bundle within 0 to 5 degrees of the axis, and a polymer binding said fiber bundles;
- wherein said polymer and said fiber bundles are biodegradable;
- wherein said fibers are separated by no more than 100 microns within each bundle;
- and wherein at least a portion of the reinforcing fibers are of a continuous length wherein said length is at least 100% of the length of the medical implant and is up to 10,000% of the length of the implant.
