Abstract
The present invention relates to substantially homogenous populations of human retinal progenitor cells having the following positive surface markers: SSEA4, CD73, PTK7 and PSA-NCAM. The invention also relates to method for preparing such substantially homogeneous cell populations from human tissue using cell sorting techniques.

A method of identifying a human retinal progenitor cell in a mixed population of cells comprising screening said mixed cell population for a cell expressing the following positive markers:
- SSEA4, CD73, PTK7, and PSA-NCAM, wherein the retinal progenitor cells lack the following negative neural stem cells surface markers:
- CD15 and CD133.
A method of preparing a purified human retinal progenitor cell population comprising the steps of:
- sorting the cells obtained from an isolated cell sample from a human tissue source containing human retinal progenitor cells using the following positive identifiable markers:
- SSEA4, CD73, PTK7, and PSA-NCAM, wherein the retinal progenitor cells lack the following negative neural stem cells surface markers:
- CD15 and CD133, and
- collecting said separated human retinal progenitor cells to prepare a purified human retinal progenitor cell population.
