Abstract
Medical catheterization is carried out by introducing a catheter into a heart, sliding the catheter through a sheath that encloses a multi-electrode probe into a chamber of the heart. The sheath is retracted to expose the probe. As the sheath is retracted the exposed probe expands into a spiral configuration, and the electrodes contact the endocardial surface of the chamber at multiple contact points.

-15. (canceled)
A method comprising:
- (a) introducing a catheter into a cardiovascular system of a patient via a sheath;
- the catheter including:
- (i) a set of mapping electrodes,
- (ii) a set of ablation electrodes, and
- (iii) a holding element positioned distally relative to the set of mapping electrodes and the set of ablation electrodes;
- and
- (b) retracting the sheath relative to the catheter, thereby exposing a portion of the catheter within a region of the cardiovascular system of the patient, the exposed portion of the catheter forming a spiral configuration, the exposed portion of the catheter including electrodes of the set of mapping electrodes and electrodes of the set of ablation electrodes;
- (c) contacting a wall of the region of the cardiovascular system of the patient with the holding element, the holding element providing purchase for the catheter on the wall;
- (d) contacting the wall with electrodes of the set of mapping electrodes;
- and
- (e) reading bioelectrical signals of the wall via the contacting mapping electrodes.

An apparatus comprising:
- (a) an elongate catheter body including a distal end;
- (b) a plurality of mapping electrodes near the distal end, the mapping electrodes being operable to read bioelectrical signals from tissue in a cardiovascular system of a patient;
- (c) a plurality of ablation electrodes near the distal end, the ablation electrodes being operable to form lesions in tissue in a cardiovascular system of a patient;
- and
- (d) a holding element at the distal end, the holding element being positioned distal to the mapping electrodes and the ablation electrodes, the holding element being configured to provide purchase of the catheter body on a wall of a region of a cardiovascular system of a patient.

An apparatus comprising:
- (a) an elongate catheter body including a distal end;
- (b) a plurality of mapping electrodes near the distal end, the mapping electrodes being operable to read bioelectrical signals from tissue in a cardiovascular system of a patient;
- and
- (c) a plurality of ablation electrodes near the distal end, the ablation electrodes being operable to form lesions in tissue in a cardiovascular system of a patient;
- the plurality of mapping electrodes being arranged in pairs that are positioned over corresponding single ablation electrodes of the plurality of ablation electrodes, such that each single ablation electrode of the plurality of ablation electrodes has a pair of mapping electrodes positioned over the single ablation electrode.
