Abstract
A surgical staple including a crown and a deformable member extending from the crown, the deformable member having a notch configured to cause the deformable member to bend at the notch when the staple is deformed from a first shape into a second shape. The crown of the surgical staple, in various embodiments, further includes a forming surface, or anvil, which is configured to deform the deformable member and/or guide a distal end of the deformable member when the distal end contacts the crown.

A staple cartridge, comprising:
- a cartridge body, comprising:
- a proximal end;
- a distal end;
- a knife slot extending through said cartridge body from said proximal end to said distal end;
- and
- staple cavities defined in said cartridge body, wherein said staple cavities are arranged in an inner longitudinal row of staple cavities, a middle longitudinal row of staple cavities, and an outer longitudinal row of staple cavities on one side of said knife slot;
- staples removably stored within said staple cavities;
- a proximal staple driver configured to eject a first quantity of staples from said staple cavities during a firing motion;
- an intermediate staple driver positioned distally with respect to said proximal staple driver, wherein said intermediate staple driver is configured to eject a second quantity of staples from said staple cavities which is different than said first quantity during the firing motion, and wherein said second quantity of staples includes a staple from said inner longitudinal row of staple cavities and a staple from said outer longitudinal row of staple cavities;
- and
- a distal staple driver positioned distally with respect to said intermediate staple driver and configured to eject a third quantity of staples during the firing motion, wherein said third quantity of staples is the same as said first quantity of staples.
A staple cartridge, comprising:
- a cartridge body, comprising:
- a proximal end;
- a distal end;
- a longitudinal knife slot;
- and
- staple cavities defined in said cartridge body, wherein said staple cavities are arranged in a first longitudinal row of staple cavities, a second longitudinal row of staple cavities, and a third longitudinal row of staple cavities on one side of said longitudinal knife slot;
- staples removably stored within said staple cavities;
- a proximal staple driver configured to eject a first quantity of staples from said staple cavities during a firing motion;
- an intermediate staple driver positioned distally with respect to said proximal staple driver, wherein said intermediate staple driver is configured to eject a second quantity of staples from said staple cavities which is different than said first quantity during the firing motion, and wherein said second quantity of staples includes a staple from said first longitudinal row of staple cavities and a staple from said third longitudinal row of staple cavities;
- and
- a distal staple driver positioned distally with respect to said intermediate staple driver and configured to eject a third quantity of staples during the firing motion, wherein said third quantity of staples is the same as said first quantity of staples.
A staple cartridge, comprising:
- a cartridge body, comprising:
- a proximal end;
- a distal end;
- a longitudinal knife slot;
- and
- staple cavities defined in said cartridge body, wherein said staple cavities are arranged in a first longitudinal row of staple cavities, a second longitudinal row of staple cavities, and a third longitudinal row of staple cavities on one side of said longitudinal knife slot;
- staples removably stored within said staple cavities;
- a first staple driver configured to eject a first number of staples from said staple cavities during a firing motion;
- a second staple driver positioned distally with respect to said first staple driver, wherein said second staple driver is configured to eject a second number of staples from said staple cavities which is different than said first number of staples during the firing motion, and wherein said second number of staples includes a staple from said first longitudinal row of staple cavities and a staple from said third longitudinal row of staple cavities;
- and
- a third staple driver positioned distally with respect to said second staple driver and configured to eject a third number of staples during the firing motion, wherein said third number of staples is the same as said first number of staples.
