## Abstract

The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for performing encoding and decoding using a variably-sized quantization coefficient group, in quantization coefficient group encoding and decoding of video compression technology.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A video decoding method, performed by a video decoding apparatus, comprising:
obtaining sub-group usage information indicating whether sub-group partitioning of a coding unit is usable from a bitstream;
obtaining partition type information indicating partition of a current coding unit based on the sub-group usage information;
identifying at least one sub-group by partitioning the current coding unit based on the partition type information; and
inverse-quantizing the current coding unit,
wherein, when the partition type information indicates that the current coding unit is partitioned into a plurality of sub-groups having a non-square shape, the current coding unit is inverse-quantized by inverse-quantizing each of the plurality of sub-groups having the non-square shape.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the partition type information indicates that the current coding unit is not partitioned, that the current coding unit is horizontally partitioned, or that the current coding unit is vertically partitioned.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein, when the partition type information indicates that the current coding unit is not partitioned, the current coding unit is inverse-quantized based on the sub-group having size of the current coding unit.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein, when the partition type information indicates that the current coding unit is horizontally partitioned, the current coding unit is inverse-quantized based on at least two sub-groups partitioning the current coding unit horizontally.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein, when the partition type information indicates that the current coding unit is vertically partitioned, the current coding unit is inverse-quantized based on at least two sub-groups partitioning the current coding unit vertically.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1,
wherein the sub-group includes quantization coefficients, and
a scanning order for the quantization coefficients is determined based on the partition type information.

### Claim 7

A video decoding apparatus, comprising:
a memory; and
a processor configured to:
obtain sub-group usage information indicating whether sub-group partitioning of a coding unit is usable from a bitstream,
obtain partition type information indicating partition of a current coding unit based on the sub-group usage information,
identify at least one sub-group by partitioning the current coding unit based on the partition type information, and
inverse-quantize the current coding unit,
wherein, when the partition type information indicates that the current coding unit is partitioned into a plurality of sub-groups having a non-square shape, the current coding unit is inverse-quantized by inverse-quantizing each of the plurality of sub-groups having the non-square shape.

### Claim 8

A video encoding method, performed by a video encoding apparatus, comprising:
determining whether sub-group partitioning of a coding unit is usable;
determining partition of a current coding unit;
identifying at least one sub-group by partitioning the current coding unit based on the determined partition of the current coding unit;
quantizing the current coding unit; and
encoding the sub-group usage information and the partition type information into a bitstream,
wherein, when the current coding unit is partitioned into a plurality of sub-groups having a non-square shape, the current coding unit is quantized by quantizing each of the plurality of sub-groups having the non-square shape.

### Claim 9

A non-transitory computer readable recording medium storing a bitstream which is generated by a video encoding method,
wherein the video encoding method comprises
determining whether sub-group partitioning of a coding unit is usable;
determining partition of a current coding unit;
identifying at least one sub-group by partitioning the current coding unit based on the determined partition of the current coding unit;
quantizing the current coding unit; and
encoding the sub-group usage information and the partition type information into a bitstream,
wherein, when the current coding unit is partitioned into a plurality of sub-groups having a non-square shape, the current coding unit is quantized by quantizing each of the plurality of sub-groups having the non-square shape.
