Abstract
This invention relates to polymerization of muconic acid and its derivatives. Muconic acid useful for the present invention can be in any of its isomeric forms including cis, cis-muconic acid (ccMA), cis, trans-muconic acid (ctMA), and trans, trans-muconic acid (ttMA). Muconic acid used in the present invention can be derived either from renewable carbon resources through biological fermentation or from non-renewable petrochemical resources through biological fermentation or chemical conversion.

A polymer comprising recurring units of the formula (i)
- —[RO2C—C—C═C—C—CO2R]— (i)
- wherein, each of R is hydrogen or alkyl or aryl, alkyl and
- said recurring units of the formula (i) is derived from a monomeric unit of the formula (ii)
- RO2C—C═C—C═C—CO2R (ii)
- through an electrochemical reaction and each of R in said monomeric unit of the formula (ii) is hydrogen or alkyl or aryl and wherein said monomeric unit of formula (ii) is derived from renewable biological materials as a source of carbon using a microbial fermentation process.
A polymer comprising recurring units of the formula (i),
- wherein each of R is hydrogen or alkyl or aryl group and
- said recurring unit of the formula (iii) is derived from a monomeric unit of the formula (i) as in claim 1 through a condensation reaction with an aldehyde or ketone and each of R in said monomeric unit of the formula (i) is hydrogen or alkyl or aryl group and said recurring units of the formula (i) is derived from a monomeric unit of the formula (ii) as in claim 1
- RO2C—C═C—C═C—CO2R (ii)
- through an electrochemical reaction and each of R in said monomeric unit of the formula (ii) is hydrogen or alkyl or aryl group and wherein said monomeric unit of formula (ii) is derived from renewable biological materials as a source of carbon using a microbial fermentation process.
