Abstract
A protection system for a motor vehicle having a sensor for determining an angle of inclination of the motor vehicle about its longitudinal axis. An airbag attached on an outside of the motor vehicle. A processing device designed to detect a risk that the motor vehicle may tip over, on the basis of the inclination angle determined, and in that case activates the airbag. The airbag can be pivoted in the vertical direction from an area close to the ground.

A protection system (110) for a motor vehicle (105), the protection system (110) comprises:
- a sensor (115) for determining an angle of inclination of the motor vehicle (105) about a longitudinal axis (130) of the motor vehicle;
- an airbag (120) attached on an outside of the motor vehicle (105);
- a processing device (125), designed to detect a risk of the motor vehicle tipping over based on the determined angle of inclination, and to activate the airbag (120) if there is a risk of the motor vehicle tipping over, the airbag (120) is pivotable out from an area of the motor vehicle near the ground in a vertical direction.
A system (100) comprising a motor vehicle (105) with a protection system (110) having a sensor (115) for determining an angle of inclination of the motor vehicle (105) about a longitudinal axis (130) of the motor vehicle;
- an airbag (120) attached on an outside of the motor vehicle (105);
- a processing device (125), designed to detect a risk of the motor vehicle tipping over based on the determined angle of inclination, and to activate the airbag (120) if there is a risk of the motor vehicle tipping over, the airbag (120) is pivotable out from an area near the ground in a vertical direction.
A method (300) for controlling a protection system (110) of a motor vehicle (105), the protection system having a sensor (115) for determining an angle of inclination of the motor vehicle (105) about a longitudinal axis (130) of the motor vehicle;
- a first airbag (120) attached on an outside of the motor vehicle (105);
- a processing device (125), designed to detect a risk of the motor vehicle tipping over based on the determined angle of inclination, and to activate the first airbag (120) if there is a risk of the motor vehicle tipping over, the first airbag (120) is pivotable out from an area of the motor vehicle near the ground in a vertical direction, the method comprising:
- determining (305) the angle of inclination of the motor vehicle motor vehicle (105) about the longitudinal axis (130) of the motor vehicle;
- detecting the risk of the motor vehicle (105) tipping over;
- and
- activating (315) the first airbag (120) attached on the outside of the motor vehicle (105) and which is pivotable in the vertical direction from the area of the motor vehicle near the ground.
