Anti-microbial coating

An electrostatic spraying method for coating at least one substrate, comprising at least the following steps:

• providing a substrate;
• coating the substrate with an aqueous solution or suspension in droplet form by the electrostatic spraying method, the aqueous solution or suspension comprising at least one metal oxide and/or at least one metal salt soluble therein, whereby the aqueous solution or suspension has antimicrobial properties;
• and
• forming a solid, antimicrobial coating on the substrate in the form of a matrix structure by evaporation of the aqueous and/or liquid phase from the aqueous solution or suspension, so that the metal oxide and/or the metal salt is/are contained in the matrix structure of the coating.
