Simple Ethernet Header Compression

A method, comprising:

• receiving, by a processor of a second network node, a first packet with a full header from a first network node;
• establishing, by the processor, a header compression context for the full header;
• and
• transmitting, by the processor, a feedback associated with the full header to the first network node.

An apparatus implementable in a first network node, comprising:

• a communication device configured to communicate with at least a second network node;
• a processor coupled to the communication device and configured to function as a compressor by performing operations comprising:
• transmitting, via the communication device, a first packet with a full header to the second network node;
• determining whether a header compression context for the full header has been established by the second network node;
• and
• either:
• transmitting, via the communication device, a second packet with a compressed header to the second network node responsive to determining that the header compression context for the full header has been established by the second network node;
• or
• transmitting, via the communication device, the second packet or a third packet with the full header to the second network node responsive to determining that the header compression context for the full header has not been established by the second network node.
