Abstract
Embodiments of the present invention relate to a clasp with a mechanism to lock one or more keys. The key can be affixed to an end of an ornamental item such as a chain, pendant, or charm. The clasp can include an inlet port for inserting a key and one or more channels for guiding the key towards one or more locking pockets. A compressible material can resist movement of the key along the channel and can prevent unwanted removal of the key at the locking pocket.
Claims20
A jewelry clasp, comprising:
- an inlet port configured to receive the head of a key of one of a set of decorative pieces to be connected by the jewelry clasp;
- a channel along the surface of the clasp, the channel joining the inlet port and a locking pocket, wherein the channel accommodates a neck of the key and the channel prevents extraction of the head of the key from the clasp;
- and
- a compressible material placed within the clasp configured to rebound the head of the key, wherein at least a portion of the channel connected to the locking pocket causes the key to compress the compressible material to a first compression amount, wherein the key entering the locking pocket causes the head to compress the material to a second compression amount that is less compressed than the first compression amount and hinders movement of the head of the key back into the channel.
1 more element
A method for creating a clasp:
- cut an inlet port, a channel, and a locking pocket along a surface of a shell, wherein the inlet port can receive the head of a key and the channel and the locking pocket prevent the head of the key from being extracted except at the inlet port;
- affix a compressible material to a front plate;
- and
- affix the shell to the front plate so that an interior formed by the front plate and the shell includes the compressible material, wherein the compressible material is configured to rebound the head of a key along the surface of the clasp, wherein at least a portion of the channel connected to the locking pocket causes the head of the key to compress the material to a first compression amount, wherein the locking pocket causes the head to compress the material to a second compression amount that is less compressed than the first compression amount and hinders movement of the head of the key back into the channel.
1 more element
A method for connecting an ornamental item to a clasp comprising:
- inserting a head of a key of the ornamental item into an inlet port of the clasp;
- compressing, using the head of the key, a compressible material in the interior of the clasp;
- dragging the key from the inlet port to a locking pocket of the clasp by passing the key along a channel connecting the inlet port and the locking pocket;
- and
- releasing the key at the locking pocket allowing the compressible material to at least partially decompress as the key enters the locking pocket.
