Abstract
Disclosed is a collapsible kite frame that permits at kite to be fit into an economical shipping box, thereby significantly decreasing the costs associated with shipping. The kite frame utilizes a double revolute joint to connect the support members of a kite frame. A support sheath locks the joint and support members in a straight alignment, but, when removed, the support members are free to rotate and move inward, towards each other, thereby shortening the combined length span of the support members when in a straight alignment.
Claims14
An apparatus for supporting and collapsing a kite frame that comprises:
- a first support member,
- a second support member,
- a double revolute joint, and
- a support sheath that is slidable over said first and second support members and double revolute joint;
- wherein the double revolute joint rotably connects the first support member to the second support member such that the first support member and second support member may each rotate so as to transition from a straight alignment to one where the support members overlap, thereby truncating the combined length span of the support members.
A method of collapsing a kite frame to fit inside a box comprising the steps of:
- obtaining a kite with a kite frame with at least one rotational joint;
- sliding at least one support sheath away from said at least one rotational joint, and collapsing the kite frame by rotating at least one support member relative to said at least one rotational joint;
- and inserting the collapsed kite and kite frame into a box;
- whereby a relatively large kite may be shipped in a relatively small shipping box.
A method of assembling a kite frame comprising:
- obtaining a kite with at least one rotational joint;
- aligning a first and second support member connected by said rotational joint;
- sliding a support sheath over the rotational joint;
- and
- locking the support sheath in place.
