A composition comprising a first component selected from the group consisting of chitosan, chitin, derivatives of chitosan, derivatives of chitin, and any combination thereof, the first component having a degree of deacetylation of at least 50%;
- at least one triprotic acid and at least one solubilizing acid, wherein the triprotic acid is present in an amount of at least 10% of the first component, and wherein the solubilizing acid is a monoprotic acid.
A method of manufacturing a composition comprising a first component selected from the group consisting of chitosan, chitin, derivatives of chitosan, derivatives of chitin, and combinations thereof, the first component having a degree of deacetylation of at least 50%;
- at least one triprotic acid and at least one solubilizing acid, wherein the triprotic acid is present in an amount of at least 10% of the first component, and wherein the solubilizing acid is a monoprotic acid, the method comprising the steps of:
- a. coating at least a portion of the first component with a mixture comprising the at least one triprotic acid and the at least one solubilizing acid;
- and/or
- b. absorbing into at least a portion of the first component a mixture comprising the at least one triprotic acid and the at least one solubilizing acid.
