Abstract
The medical safety device utilizes an active needle retraction assembly and a guidewire retraction assembly which retracts the guidewire at a retraction rate greater than the needle retraction rate to safely manage significant lengths of guidewire. A passive retraction system may be used with the active retraction assembly to rapidly retract the needle and guidewire after initial retraction. The guidewire retraction assembly includes a pulley system to increase forces applied to the device to retract the guidewire and needle retraction assembly retracts the needle. The device encloses the needle and guidewire to protect from contact with contaminated materials.

A medical assembly safety device for retraction of a needle and a guidewire after intravascular catheter placement wherein the catheter remains positioned and the needle and guidewire are to be retracted within the safety device comprising:
- a housing extending longitudinally between proximal and distal ends and having an upper housing and defining a cavity extending along at least a portion of the longitudinal length of the housing, said housing being configured for receipt of the retracted needle and guidewire;
- a needle retraction assembly within said housing comprising a retraction frame having proximal and distal end surfaces and a longitudinal frame member extending between said proximal and distal end surfaces for retracting the needle at a first retraction rate and configured to retain the needle after retraction, said needle retraction assembly also comprising an external tab extending from an outer surface of said retraction frame, said external tab being configured to operatively couple with said retraction frame;
- and
- a guidewire retraction assembly for retracting the guidewire at a second retraction rate, said guidewire retraction assembly being operatively connected to said retraction frame, wherein said second rate of retraction of said guidewire is greater than said first rate of retraction of said needle.
A medical assembly safety device for retraction of a needle and a guidewire after endovascular catheter placement wherein the catheter remains positioned and the needle and guidewire are to be retracted within the safety device comprising:
- a housing extending longitudinally between proximal and distal ends and having an upper housing and defining a cavity extending along at least a portion of the longitudinal length of the housing, said housing being configured for receipt of the retracted needle and guidewire;
- a needle retraction assembly within said housing and comprising a retraction frame having proximal and distal end surfaces and a longitudinal frame member extending between said proximal and distal end surfaces for retracting the needle and configured to retain the needle after retraction, said needle retraction assembly also comprising an external tab extending from an upper surface of said retraction frame, said external tab being configured to operatively couple with said retraction frame;
- and
- a guidewire retraction assembly for retracting the guidewire, said guidewire retraction assembly being operatively connected to said retraction frame;
- an active retraction system comprising said needle retraction assembly wherein said external tab is actively moved proximally to retract the needle and guidewire;
- and
- a passive retraction system for further rapidly retracting the guidewire utilizing said guidewire retraction assembly, said passive retraction system being positioned within said cavity and operatively connected to said active retraction system wherein said active retraction system initially retracts the needle and guidewire and is configured to activate said passive retraction system to further retract the guidewire.
A method of retracting a needle and guidewire and securely retaining the retracted needle after insertion of an intravascular catheter integrated with the needle and guidewire utilizing a medical assembly safety device comprising a housing defining a cavity configured for receipt of the retracted needle and guidewire, a needle retraction assembly within the housing and a guidewire retraction assembly operatively connected to the needle retraction assembly, said method comprising the steps of:
- retracting the needle proximally by proximally moving the needle retraction assembly wherein the needle is retracted at a first rate of retraction;
- substantially simultaneously retracting the guidewire wherein forces from the proximal movement of the needle retraction assembly are transferred to the guidewire retraction assembly which retracts the guidewire at a second rate of retraction which is greater than said needle first rate of retraction.
- actively retracting the needle and guidewire proximally by proximally moving the needle retraction assembly;
- substantially simultaneously actively retracting the guidewire wherein forces from the proximal movement of the needle retraction assembly are transferred to the guidewire retraction assembly;
- passively retracting the guidewire by activating a passive retraction system after said step of actively retracting the needle and guidewire;
- and
- sealing the needle within the needle retraction assembly.
