Point cloud geometry compression

A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing program instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:

• sub-sample a point cloud, wherein the sub-sampled point cloud comprises fewer points than an original version of the point cloud;
• for respective ones of the points of the sub-sampled point cloud:
• predict a predicted point location between the respective point of the sub-sampled point cloud and a neighboring point in the sub-sampled point cloud;
• determine, based on comparing the predicted point location to the original version of the point cloud, update information for the predicted point location;
• and
• encode data for a compressed version of the point cloud, the data comprising the determined update information for the predicted point locations.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing program instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:

• obtain a sub-sampled version of an original version of a point cloud;
• receive update information for predicted point locations between respective points of the sub-sampled version of the original version of the point cloud;
• for each of respective ones of the points of the sub-sampled version of the point cloud:
• predict a respective predicted point location between the respective point and a neighboring point in the sub-sampled version of the point cloud;
• and
• apply the update information for the predicted point location;
• and
• generate a decompressed version of the point cloud, wherein the decompressed version of the point cloud comprises the points of the sub-sampled version of the point cloud and one or more points at the predicted point locations to which the update information has been applied.

A device, comprising:

• a memory storing program instructions configured to implement a point cloud decoder;
• and
• one or more processors, wherein the program instructions, when executed on the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:
• obtain a sub-sampled version of an original version of a point cloud;
• receive update information for predicted point locations between respective points of the sub-sampled version of the original version of the point cloud;
• for each of respective ones of the points of the sub-sampled version of the point cloud:
• predict a respective predicted point location between the respective point and a neighboring point in the sub-sampled version of the point cloud;
• and
• apply the update information for the predicted point cloud location;
• and
• generate a decompressed version of the point cloud, wherein the decompressed point cloud comprises the points of the sub-sampled point cloud and one or more points at the predicted point locations to which the update information has been applied.
