Managed Switching Between One or More Hosts and Solid State Drives (SSDs) Based on the NVMe Protocol to Provide Host Storage Services

A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to at least:

• receive a first storage access command from a host via a peripheral computer interface express (PCIe) interface to access storage, wherein the first storage access command conforms to non-volatile memory express (NVMe) and the storage comprises two or more solid state drives (SSDs);
• send a respective second storage access command to the two or more SSDs based on the first storage access command;
• receive a respective completion from each of the two or more SSDs based on the respective second storage access command;
• and
• send a completion to the host via the PCIe interface based on the received completions from each of the two or more SSDs.

A non-volatile memory express (NVMe) switch comprising:

• a command queue;
• a completion queue;
• instructions stored in memory of the NVMe switch and that, when executed by one or more processors of the NVMe switch, cause the NVMe switch to at least:
• receive a first storage access command from a host via a peripheral computer interface express (PCIe) interface to access storage, wherein the first storage access command conforms to non-volatile memory express (NVMe) and the storage comprises two or more solid state drives (SSDs);
• send, via the command queue, a respective second storage access command to the two or more SSDs based on the first storage access command;
• receive, via the completion queue, a respective completion from each of the two or more SSDs based on the second respective storage access command;
• and
• send a completion to the host via the PCIe interface based on the received completions from each of the two or more SSDs.
