Synthesis of a phosphorous containing monomer and the incorporation in polycarbonate by interfacial polymerization thereof

A phosphinate copolycarbonate comprising units of the formula

• wherein
• each Ra is independently a halogen atom, C1-10 alkyl, C1-10 haloalkyl, C1-12 alkoxy, C6-10 aryl, or C6-12 haloaryl;
• each Xa is independently a single bond, —O—, —S—, —S(O)—, —S(O)2—, —C(O)—, C3-18 cycloalkylidene;
• a C1-25 alkylidene of the formula —C(Re)(Rd) wherein Re and Rd are each independently hydrogen, C1-12 alkyl, C1-12 cycloalkyl, C7-12 arylalkyl, C1-12 heteroalkyl, or cyclic C7-12 heteroarylalkyl;
• or a group of the formula —C(═Rh)— wherein Rh is a divalent C1-12 hydrocarbon group;
• Re and Rf are independently a halogen atom, C1-10 alkyl, C1-10 haloalkyl, C1-10 alkoxy, C1-10 haloalkoxy, C2-10 alkenyl, or C3-10 cycloalkyl;
• each Rg is a substituted or unsubstituted C6-18 aryl, C1-10 alkyl, C1-10 haloalkyl, C1-10 alkoxy, C1-10 haloalkoxy, C2-10 alkenyl, C3-10 cycloalkyl, C6-10 aryl, or C6-12 haloaryl;
• Ara and Arb are each independently the same or different C6-18 aryl;
• a, e, and f are each independently 0 to 4, or 0 to 2, or 0;
• c is 0 or 1;
• and
• x and y represent the molar ratio of each unit in the phosphinate copolycarbonate, and are 0.5:99.5 to 99.5:0.5.
