Abstract
Various embodiments include a drive system for a vehicle, the system comprising: an internal combustion engine for converting chemical energy stored in a liquid fuel into mechanical energy; a fuel tank for storing fuel for use by the internal combustion engine; and an electric machine having a rotor, a stator, and a cooling system for cooling at least one component of the electric machine using a cooling liquid. The cooling liquid comprises the fuel.
Claims15
A drive system for a vehicle, the system comprising:
- an internal combustion engine for converting chemical energy stored in a liquid fuel into mechanical energy;
- a fuel tank for storing fuel for use by the internal combustion engine;
- and
- an electric machine having a rotor, a stator, and a cooling system for cooling at least one component of the electric machine using a cooling liquid;
- wherein the cooling liquid comprises the fuel.
A vehicle comprising:
- an internal combustion engine for converting chemical energy stored in a liquid fuel into mechanical energy;
- a drive system using the mechanical energy to propel the vehicle;
- a fuel tank for storing fuel for use by the internal combustion engine;
- and
- an electric machine having a rotor, a stator, and a cooling system for cooling at least one component of the electric machine using a cooling liquid;
- wherein the cooling liquid comprises the fuel.
A method for cooling an electric machine in a drive system, the method comprising:
- feeding fuel from a fuel tank into a cooling system of the electric machine;
- and
- cooling at least one component of the electric machine with the fuel as cooling liquid.
