Modular food holding system

A smart sensor device, configured to:

• removably attach to a handle of a food pan such that the smart sensor device may be detached from the handle, the food pan being configured to be removably inserted within a food holding cavity of a food holding chamber of a plurality of individual modularized food holding chambers that are physically and communicatively removably connected to one another;
• sense a characteristic of an interior environment of the food pan while attached to the handle of the food pan;
• and
• communicate with a controller via an electrical connection of the food pan to the food holding chamber while the food pan is inserted within the food holding chamber, wherein the controller is disposed within either the food holding chamber or a chamber base physically and communicatively removably connected to one of the food holding chambers in the plurality of food holding chambers.

A smart sensor device, configured to:

• removably attach to a food pan as a part of a handle of the food pan such that the smart sensor device may be detached from the food pan by detaching the handle of the food pan, the food pan being configured to be removably inserted within a food holding cavity of a food holding chamber of a plurality of individual modularized food holding chambers that are physically and communicatively removably connected to one another;
• sense a characteristic of an interior environment of the food pan while attached to the food pan;
• and
• communicate with a controller via an electrical connection of the food pan to the food holding chamber while the food pan is inserted within the food holding chamber, wherein the controller is disposed within either the food holding chamber or a chamber base physically and communicatively removably connected to one of the food holding chambers in the plurality of food holding chambers.
