Printing apparatus and printing method

A printing apparatus comprising:

• a holding unit capable of holding multiple types of print medium;
• a print unit configured to perform printing on the print medium held by the holding unit;
• a detecting unit capable of detecting the print medium and the holding unit;
• a movement unit capable of relatively moving the detecting unit and the holding unit in a first direction and in a second direction intersecting the first direction;
• a determining unit configured to determine a process to obtain information on the position of the print medium based on the type of the print medium;
• an obtaining unit configured to obtain the information on the position of the print medium by changing the relative position of the detecting unit with respect to the holding unit based on the process determined by the determining unit;
• and
• a setting unit configured to set a print position for the print medium based on the information obtained by the obtaining unit.
