Abstract
An apparatus is described which uses directly modulated InGaN Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) or InGaN lasers as the transmitters for an underwater data-communication device. The receiver uses automatic gain control to facilitate performance of the apparatus over a wide-range of distances and water turbidities.

A system to perform seismic exploration in an aqueous medium, comprising:
- a plurality of ocean bottom seismometer (OBS) units disposed in the aqueous medium, each of the plurality of OBS units comprising a detector and a wake-up system;
- an underwater vehicle to provide an indication to at least one of the plurality of OBS units;
- and
- the at least one of the plurality of OBS units to:
- receive the indication from the underwater vehicle;
- provide, responsive to receipt of the indication from the underwater vehicle, an indication to the wake-up system;
- and
- transmit, responsive to validation of an optical communication link by the wake-up system, seismic data to the underwater vehicle via the optical communication link.

A method of performing seismic exploration in an aqueous medium, comprising:
- providing a plurality of ocean bottom seismometer (OBS) units disposed in the aqueous medium, each of the plurality of OBS units comprising a detector and a wake-up system;
- providing, by an underwater vehicle, an indication to at least one of the plurality of OBS units;
- receiving, by the plurality of OBS units, the indication from the underwater vehicle;
- providing, responsive to receipt of the indication from the underwater vehicle, an indication to the wake-up system;
- and
- transmitting, by the at least one of the plurality of OBS units responsive to validation of an optical communication link by the wake-up system, seismic data to the underwater vehicle via the optical communication link.
