Low resolution slide imaging and slide label imaging and high resolution slide imaging using dual optical paths and a single imaging sensor

A non-transitory computer-readable medium having stored thereon one or more sequences of instructions that cause one or more processors to:

• move a stage supporting a slide having a label area and a sample area with respect to a first optical path defined by a first lens and a line scan camera;
• and
• use the line scan camera to capture a whole slide image of the slide being simultaneously illuminated by a first illumination system and a second illumination system,
• wherein the whole slide image of the slide comprises the entire label area and the entire sample area.

A method wherein one or more processors are programmed to:

• in a first operation,
• control a stage to move in a first direction with respect to a first optical path defined by a first lens and a line scan camera, wherein the stage supports a slide having a label area and a sample area, and
• use the line scan camera to capture a first whole slide image of the slide being illuminated by a first illumination system while the stage is moving in the first direction, wherein the first whole slide image includes the entire label area and the entire sample area;
• in a second operation,
• control the stage to move in a second direction with respect to the first optical path, wherein the second direction is opposite the first direction, and
• use the line scan camera to capture a second whole slide image of the slide being illuminated by a second illumination system while the stage is moving in the second direction, wherein the second whole slide image includes the entire label area and the entire sample area;
• in a third operation, control the stage to make multiple stage movements with respect to a second optical path to capture a plurality of image stripes of the slide while the slide is being illuminated by a third illumination system;
• generate a label image and a specimen image from the first and second whole slide images;
• and
• combine the plurality of image stripes into a contiguous image of a specimen on the slide.
