## Abstract

A system and method for determining presence information for mobile devices are disclosed. Specifically, the presence information for a mobile device can be determined based on whether or not the mobile device is having a unique interaction with a smart tag. If a unique interaction is detected, then the mobile device can be said to be within the presence of the smart tag and the location or presence information for the mobile device can be correlated to location information known for the smart tag.

## Claims

### Claim at position 1

1-19. (canceled)

### Claim 20

A method for determining presence of a mobile device, the method comprising:
receiving a data object, generated by a smart tag, including a Tag Authentication Cryptogram (TAC) and an identifier of the smart tag;
analyzing the TAC to determine that the data object corresponds to a unique interaction between the smart tag and a mobile device; and
correlating a location of the mobile device with a location of the smart tag in response to determining that the data object corresponds to a unique interaction between the smart tag and the mobile device.

### Claim 21 (depends on 20)

The method of claim 20, comprising determining the location of the smart tag based on the identifier of the smart tag.

### Claim 22 (depends on 20)

The method of claim 20, wherein the data object is received from the smart tag via the mobile device.

### Claim 23 (depends on 22)

The method of claim 22, wherein the data object is received from the smart tag via the mobile device and a content server.

### Claim 24 (depends on 20)

The method of claim 20, wherein the TAC includes a pseudo-randomly generated number.

### Claim 25 (depends on 20)

The method of claim 20, wherein the TAC comprises a counter that increments after each interaction with the smart tag.

### Claim 26 (depends on 22)

The method of claim 22, wherein the mobile device received the data object in one or more Near-Field Communications (NFC) Data Exchange Format (NDEF) messages.

### Claim 27 (depends on 22)

The method of claim 22, wherein the mobile device received the data object via a Bluetooth protocol.

### Claim 28 (depends on 26)

The method of claim 26, wherein the location of the smart tag corresponds to a geographical location.

### Claim 29 (depends on 26)

The method of claim 26, wherein the location of the smart tag comprises an association with another object.

### Claim 30 (depends on 23)

The method of claim 23, further comprising authorizing first content to be provided to the mobile device from the content server in response to determining that the data object corresponds to a unique interaction between the smart tag and the mobile device.

### Claim 31 (depends on 30)

The method of claim 30, further comprising authorizing second to be provided to the mobile device from the content server when it is determined that the data object does not correspond to a unique interaction between the smart tag and the mobile device.

### Claim 32

A method for determining compliance with a tour route, the method comprising:
receiving a plurality of data objects, each generated by a corresponding smart tag and including a Tag Authentication Cryptogram (TAC) and an identifier of the corresponding smart tag;
analyzing the plurality of data objects, the analyzing comprising:
for each data object, analyzing the TAC to determine that the data object corresponds to a unique interaction between the corresponding smart tag and a mobile device; and
determining the data objects correspond to a particular order of unique interactions between the mobile device and the smart tags.

### Claim 33 (depends on 32)

The method of claim 32, further comprising, for each data object, correlating a location of the mobile device with a location of the corresponding smart tag in response to determining that the data object corresponds to a unique interaction between the corresponding smart tag and the mobile device.

### Claim 34

A system for confirming presence information for mobile devices, the system comprising:
a repository of tag identifiers stored with associated location information; and
an authentication service configured to:
receive a data object, generated by a smart tag, including a Tag Authentication Cryptogram (TAC) and an identifier of the of the smart tag;
analyze the TAC to determine whether the data object corresponds to a unique interaction between the smart tag and a mobile device; and
correlate a location of the mobile device with a location of the smart tag in response to determining that the data object corresponds to a unique interaction between the smart tag and the mobile device.

### Claim 35 (depends on 34)

The system of claim 34, wherein the authentication service is executed by a server that receives the data object via a communication network.

### Claim 36 (depends on 34)

The system of claim 34, wherein the authentication service is provided on the mobile device.

### Claim 37 (depends on 36)

The system of claim 36, wherein the interaction between the mobile device and the smart tag utilizes a proximity-based radio frequency (RF) communication protocol.

### Claim 38 (depends on 34)

The system of claim 34, wherein the TAC includes a pseudo-randomly generated number.

### Claim 39 (depends on 38)

The system of claim 38, wherein the TAC comprises a counter that increments after each interaction with the smart tag.
