## Abstract

The invention provides a method of inferring exit behaviour of a user of a user device, the method comprising: displaying a page in a display portion of the user device; detecting scrolling of the displayed page within the display portion in a first direction; detecting scrolling of the displayed page within the display portion in a second direction different to the first direction; and inferring an intent to exit the page in dependence on detecting scrolling in the first direction and detecting scrolling in the second direction.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of inferring exit behaviour of a user of a user device, the method comprising:
displaying a page in a display portion of the user device;
detecting scrolling of the displayed page within the display portion in a first direction;
detecting scrolling of the displayed page within the display portion in a second direction different to the first direction; and
inferring an intent to exit the page in dependence on detecting scrolling in the first direction and detecting scrolling in the second direction.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 wherein the second direction is opposite to the first direction.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 wherein the step of inferring an intent to exit is in dependence on detecting scrolling in the first direction followed by scrolling in the second direction.

### Claim 4

canceled

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 wherein the first direction is vertically downwards and the second direction is vertically upwards with respect to the edge of the display portion and an orientation of the displayed content.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 wherein the step of inferring an intent to exit is additionally dependent on a threshold being met.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6 wherein the threshold is represented by a position on the page, wherein the position on the page is at least one of: a pixel coordinate and an event identifier.

### Claim 8

canceled

### Claim 9

canceled

### Claim 10

canceled

### Claim 11 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7 wherein the position on the page is not displayed in the display region before detecting scrolling in the first direction, and the step of detecting scrolling in the second direction is enabled responsive to the position on the page being displayed in the display region after the step of detecting scrolling in the first direction.

### Claim 12 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7 wherein the position on the page is displayed in the display region before detecting scrolling in the first direction, and the step of detecting scrolling in the second direction is enabled responsive to the position on the page not being displayed in the display region after the step of detecting scrolling in the first direction.

### Claim 13 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6 wherein the threshold is represented by a scrolling speed, wherein the step of detecting scrolling in the second direction is enabled responsive to scrolling in the first direction meeting a first scrolling speed threshold, and wherein the step of inferring an intent to exit is enabled responsive to scrolling in the second direction meeting a second scrolling speed threshold.

### Claim 14

canceled

### Claim 15

canceled

### Claim 16 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6 wherein the threshold is a percentage of the page content which has been presented in the display region, wherein the predetermined percentage of the page presented in the display portion comprises the displayed portion of the page before the page is scrolled in the first direction and any portion of the page subsequently displayed, wherein the predetermined percentage of the page presented in the display portion is representative of a first scrolling threshold in the first direction having been met, the method further comprising further comprising detecting scrolling of the displayed page in the second direction as exceeding a second scrolling threshold, wherein the step of inferring intent to exit is enabled in dependence on the second scrolling threshold being met.

### Claim 17

canceled

### Claim 18

canceled

### Claim 19

canceled

### Claim 20 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6 wherein the step of inferring an intent to exit is additionally dependent on at least one further threshold being met, wherein the further threshold is one or more of: a position not displayed in the display region before scrolling; a position displayed in the display region before scrolling; a speed of scrolling in the first direction; a speed of scrolling in the second direction; and a percentage of the page viewed.

### Claim 21

canceled

### Claim 22 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6 further comprising adjusting the threshold in dependence on the orientation of the page within the display region.

### Claim 23 (depends on 20)

The method of claim 20 further comprising adjusting the further threshold in dependence on the orientation of the page within the display region.

### Claim 24

canceled

### Claim 25 (depends on 1)

A computer program product for storing computer program code which, when executed on a computer, performs the method of claim 1.

### Claim 26

A device comprising a display portion in which a page is displayed to a user, the page being larger than the display portion such that the page is scrolled in the display portion for display of the page to the user, the device further comprising:
a first detector for detecting scrolling of the displayed page within the display portion in a first direction;
a second detector for detecting scrolling of the displayed page within the display portion in a second direction different to the first direction; and
a processor configured to infer an exit intent of the user from the displayed page in dependence on the first detector detecting the scrolling in the first direction and the second detector detecting the scrolling in the second direction.

### Claim 27 (depends on 26)

A device according to claim 26 further comprising a first speed scrolling detector for detecting a speed of scrolling in the first direction and a first speed threshold determinator.

### Claim 28

canceled

### Claim 29 (depends on 26)

A device according to claim 26 further comprising a second speed scrolling detector for detecting a speed of scrolling in the second direction and a second speed threshold determinator.

### Claim 30

canceled

### Claim 31 (depends on 26)

A device according to claim 26 further comprising a page location detector, wherein the page location detector is configured to either detect a position of a page appearing in the display region or detect a position of a page as no longer appearing in the display region.

### Claim 32
