## Abstract

A light engine system is disclosed in which the light engine system comprises a light engine. The light engine comprises independently addressable LED segments, each LED segment comprising LEDs and a flexible PCB to which the segments are attached. A light guide plate (LGP) is provided into which light from the segments is introduced, in which the light is guided, and from which the light exits to provide illumination. The segments emit light in all directions of a plane created by the LGP. A diffuser opposes a first surface of the LGP over substantially the entirety of the LGP. The diffuser diffuses light exiting the LGP into the environment away from the light engine.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A light engine system comprising an apparatus of a light engine, the light engine comprising:
a plurality of independently addressable light emitting diode (LED) segments, each LED segment comprising a plurality of LEDs;
a flexible printed circuit board (PCB) to which the LED segments are attached:
a light guide plate (LGP) into which light from the LED segments is introduced, in which the light from the LED segments is guided, and from which the light from the LED segments exits to provide illumination, the LED segments configured to emit light in all directions of a plane created by the LGP; and
a diffuser opposing a first surface of the LGP over substantially the entirety of the LGP, the diffuser configured to diffuse light exiting the LGP into the environment away from the light engine,
wherein the light engine further comprises a core comprising an opening extending completely through the core, the opening defining an inner surface of the core, and the flexible PCB comprises:
a body adjacent to one of an inner or outer surface of the core and to which the LED segments are attached, and
a plurality of legs extending from the body and bent to be adjacent and traverse to the other of the inner or outer surface, each leg associated with a different LED segment.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein:
the LGP has a frustoconical shape,
the light engine further comprises a reflector on a second surface of the LGP opposing the first surface, the reflector covering the second surface of the LGP and an outer edge surface of the LGP.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein:
the LED segments are arranged in the shape of an octagon, and
the LED segments are selectable from change of lumination of:
a single LED segment,
two LED segments on opposing sides of the octagon,
four LED segments on opposing sides of the octagon, with pairs of the LED segments adjacent to each other,
four LED segments, with pairs of the LED segments adjacent to each other and an inactive LED segment being disposed between the pairs,
four LED segments, with the four LED segments contiguous, four LED segments, with the LED segments separated by a non-active LED segment, and
all LED segments.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The system of claim 3, wherein:
the change of illumination is activation or deactivation of the LED segments.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein:
light distribution from the light engine is selectable from:
360° transmission,
270° transmission in a contiguous distribution,
