## Abstract

A damper is configured for placement within a ductwork system that includes a duct supplying conditioned air through a register boot to a register vent within a room of a building. The damper includes a damper body and a damper blade pivotally secured relative to the damper body and a resilient seal extending radially outwardly from the damper blade, the damper blade being pivotally movable between a first position in which air flow is restricted and a second position in which air flow is less restricted. A drive motor is secured relative to the damper body and is configured to move the damper blade between the first position and the second position. A deployment strap extends downstream from the damper body and facilitates placement of the damper body in a duct from an installation location within or downstream of the register boot.

a deployment strap coupled to the damper body and extending downstream from the damper body, the deployment strap configured to facilitate placement of the damper body in a duct of a ductwork system of a building from an installation location within or downstream of the register boot.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The damper of claim 1, wherein the deployment strap is configured to be secured to the register boot, and when the deployment strap is secured to the register boot, the deployment strap extends upstream and helps hold the retrofit damper in position within the duct.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The damper of claim 1, wherein the drive motor has a drive motor axis of rotation, and the damper blade has a pivot axis along which the damper blade pivots, and the pivot axis is perpendicular to the drive motor axis of rotation.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The damper of claim 3, wherein the damper blade comprises a first damper blade segment and a second damper blade segment.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The damper of claim 4, wherein the first damper blade segment and the second damper blade segment pivot towards each other when moving towards the second position and wherein the first damper blade segment and the second damper blade segment pivot away from each other when moving towards the first position.

### Claim 6 (depends on 4)

The damper of claim 4, wherein the first damper blade segment and the second damper blade segment are each pivotally secured at one end thereof to the damper body and pivot relative to a plane extending through the damper body and passing between the first damper blade segment and the second damper blade segment.

### Claim 7 (depends on 4)

The damper of claim 4, further comprising:
a threaded rod extending upstream from the damper body and operably coupled to a drive motor secured to the damper body, the threaded rod configured to rotate in response to the drive motor being actuated;
a nut threadedly engaged with the threaded rod;
the first damper blade segment including a first linking segment extending between the first damper blade segment and the nut; and
the second damper blade segment including a second linking segment extending between the second damper blade segment and the nut.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The damper of claim 1, wherein the drive motor has a drive motor axis of rotation, and the damper blade has a pivot axis along which the damper blade pivots, and the pivot axis is parallel to the drive motor axis of rotation.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The damper of claim 8, further comprising a first pair of spring-loaded standoffs extending radially outwardly from the damper body, the first pair of spring-loaded standoffs extending orthogonally to the deployment strap.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The damper of claim 9, further comprising a second pair of spring-loaded standoffs extending radially outwardly from the damper body, the second pair of spring-loaded standoffs extending orthogonally to the deployment strap and orthogonally to the first pair of spring-loaded standoffs.

### Claim 11

A damper configured for placement within a ductwork system, the ductwork system including a duct that supplies conditioned air through a register boot to a register vent within a room of a building, the damper comprising:
a damper body;
a threaded rod extending upstream from the damper body and operably coupled to a drive motor secured to the damper body, the threaded rod configured to rotate in response to the drive motor being actuated;
a nut threadedly engaged with the threaded rod;
a first damper blade segment pivotally secured to the damper body and extending upstream from the damper body, the first damper blade segment including a first linking segment extending between the first damper blade segment and the nut;
a second damper blade segment pivotally secured to the damper body and extending upstream from the damper body, the second damper blade segment including a second linking segment extending between the second damper blade segment and the nut;
a resilient seal extending radially outwardly from the first damper blade segment and the second damper blade segment, the resilient seal having a shape that facilitates the resilient seal to seal against an interior of the duct; and
wherein the first linking segment and the second linking segment constrain the nut against rotation such that rotation of the threaded rod causes the nut to translate along the threaded rod, and translation of the nut in a first direction causes the first damper blade segment and the second damper blade segment to pivot closer together while translation of the nut in a second direction causes the first damper blade segment and the second damper blade segment to pivot farther apart.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The damper of claim 11, wherein the first damper blade segment includes a first side and a second side parallel to the first side, and a curved side extending between the first side and the second side.
