## Abstract

The present invention relates to an erosion control apparatus and methods of using and installing the apparatus. The apparatus is constructed to prevent erosion of soil during typical weather or tidal conditions and adverse weather events. The apparatus can include a plurality of anchored rolls and soil lifts operative to stabilize the shoreline.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An erosion control apparatus comprising:
a plurality of fiber rolls, wherein the fiber rolls are arranged relative to a slope adjacent to a shoreline;
a plurality of anchors, each anchor comprising a cable, each cable extending from one or more fiber rolls to a depth into the slope, a most seaward anchor inserted at a deeper depth than other anchors of the plurality of anchors;
a connecting cable harnessing together the plurality of fiber rolls; and
a fill material positioned between the fiber rolls and the anchor points, at least a portion of the plurality of fiber rolls and the fill material being positioned over the anchor points.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein each cable extends from inside a fiber roll.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of crimps, each crimp securing a cable to a fiber roll.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The apparatus of claim 3, wherein each crimp forms a loop in a cable.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The apparatus of claim 4, wherein each loop is welded at a point below a fiber roll.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, the anchors being spaced at intervals across each fiber roll, each interval having a length in a range of 24 inches to 96 inches.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the anchors are inserted at a depth of at least 42 inches below a slope surface of the apparatus.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein each anchor provides between at least 2,500 to 6,500 pounds of holding force through the cable.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a first trench located at a highest end of the apparatus; the trench being backfilled, wherein the first trench is at least 6 inches wide and at least 6 inches deep.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the trench is covered with sand or soil.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising plant material positioned on or within at least one fiber roll.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a mesh that covers at least one of the fiber rolls.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising at least one erosion control blanket, wherein the blanket comprises a biodegradable material.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a marsh installation placed seaward of a first fiber roll of the apparatus relative to the shoreline, wherein the marsh installation comprises a plurality of cobblestones wrapped in coir fiber.

### Claim 15 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the fill material comprises a soil lift coupled to at least one fiber roll.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the soil lift comprises at least one layer of coir fabric that retains sediment.

### Claim 17 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein each anchor includes a duckbill anchor or a helical anchor.

### Claim 18 (depends on 16)

The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the most seaward anchor is a helical anchor.

### Claim 19 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein each cable is coupled to a plurality of rolls.

### Claim 20

A method of installing an erosion control apparatus comprising:
arranging a plurality of fiber rolls relative to a plurality of anchors;
connecting the plurality of anchors to the plurality of fiber rolls with one or more cables and a connecting cable harnessing together the plurality of fiber rolls, the anchors positioned at a depth, a most seaward anchor positioned at a deeper depth than the other anchors of the plurality of anchors, wherein each cable passes through a fill material.

### Claim 21 (depends on 20)

The method of claim 20, wherein each anchor point is placed in position before the fiber rolls are positioned.

### Claim 22 (depends on 20)

The method of claim 20, further comprising securing a plurality of crimps, each crimp securing a cable to a fiber roll.

### Claim 23 (depends on 22)

The method of claim 22, wherein each crimp forms a loop in a cable.

### Claim 24 (depends on 23)

The method of claim 23, wherein each loop is welded at a point blow a fiber roll.

### Claim 25 (depends on 20)

The method of claim 20, further comprising inserting the plurality of anchors at at an interval, each interval can have a length in a range of 24 inches to 96 inches.

### Claim 26 (depends on 25)

The method of claim 25, further comprising inserting the anchors at a depth of at least 42 inches below a slope surface of the apparatus.

### Claim 26 (depends on 20)

The method of claim 20, wherein each anchor provides between at least 2,500 to 6,500 pounds of holding force through the cable.

### Claim 27 (depends on 20)

The method of claim 20, further comprising installing a soil lift comprising at least one layer of coir fabric.

### Claim 28 (depends on 20)

The method of claim 20, further comprising installing a marsh installation seaward of a first fiber roll of the apparatus relative to the shoreline, wherein the marsh installation comprises a plurality of cobblestones wrapped in coir fiber.
