## Abstract

A construct, for use in articles like apparel, footwear, backpacks, etc., the construct including a substrate, e.g., a textile, foam, leather or rubber material, having a surface of plasma transformed textile material; colorant set in the plasma transformed textile material, providing a change to the color of the underlying substrate material; and wherein the colorant and the plasma transformed substrate material are chemically bonded together.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A construct, comprising;
a textile having a surface of plasma transformed textile material;
colorant set in the plasma transformed textile material, providing a color change to the underlying textile material; and
wherein the colorant and the plasma transformed textile material are chemically bonded together.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The construct of claim 1 wherein the textile material comprises a roll of textile materials of at least any roll size from 10 inches width to 72 inches and is approximately 1-100 meters in length.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The construct of claim 1 wherein the colorant is selected from the group of: acid dyes, basic dyes, disperse dyes, direct or substantive, mordant and chrome, pigment, organic, solvent, azoic, sulfur, acetate rayon dyes, nylon dyes, cellulose acetate dyes, and vat dyes.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The construct of claim 1 wherein the colorant is selected from the group of: azo dyes, anthraquinone dyes, benzodifuranone dyes, polycyclic aromatic carbonyl dyes, indigoid dyes, polymethine and related dyes, styryl dyes, di- and tri-aryl carbonium dyes, phthalocyanine dyes, quinophthalone dyes, sulfur dyes, nitro and nitroso dyes, and miscellaneous dyes.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The construct of claim 1 wherein the colorant comprises a layer of polymer material.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

An item of apparel or footwear, comprising:
a construct according to claim 1.

### Claim 7

A construct, comprising;
a plasma transformed substrate material;
colorant set in the plasma transformed substrate material, providing a color change to the underlying substrate material; and
wherein the colorant and the plasma transformed substrate material are chemically, permanently bonded together such that the affixing of the colorant to the substrate provides a wash durable coating on the substrate without the affixed colorant negatively affecting the bulk properties of the substrate.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The construct of claim 7 wherein the colorant is selected from the group of: acid dyes, basic dyes, disperse dyes, direct or substantive, mordant and chrome, pigment, organic, solvent, azoic, sulfur, acetate rayon dyes, nylon dyes, cellulose acetate dyes, and vat dyes.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

The construct of claim 7 wherein the colorant is selected from the group of: azo dyes, anthraquinone dyes, benzodifuranone dyes, polycyclic aromatic carbonyl dyes, indigoid dyes, polymethine and related dyes, styryl dyes, di- and tri-aryl carbonium dyes, phthalocyanine dyes, quinophthalone dyes, sulfur dyes, nitro and nitroso dyes.

### Claim 10 (depends on 7)

The construct of claim 7 wherein the substrate comprises a textile; and the colorant comprises a polymer coating set at the surface of the textile.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The construct of claim 1 wherein the substrate comprises a three-dimensional object

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The construct of claim 11 wherein the three-dimensional object comprises at least a portion of an article of footwear, apparel, backpack or other carrier or personal items.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The construct of claim 1 wherein the substrate comprises a foamed material

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

### Claim 15 (depends on 1)

The construct of claim 1 wherein the substrate comprises natural or synthetic leathers or rubbers.

### Claim 16 (depends on 1)

The construct of claim 1 wherein the colorant is applied as coating having variable topology.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The construct of claim 16 wherein the thickness of the coating varies between 1 nm and 1 mm

### Claim 18 (depends on 10)

The construct of claim 10 wherein the coating has variable topology.

### Claim 19 (depends on 1)

The construct of claim 1 wherein the colorant is affixed to the surface of the substrate as a polymer coating, and the coating has a variable topology patterns that is generally coextensive with the coated surface, the variable topology comprising a web, a porous membrane, a network of regularly spaced perforations, or other such non-solid patterns.

### Claim 20 (depends on 1)

The construct of claim 1 wherein one or more other colorants are affixed to the surface of the plasma transformed textile.
