Abstract
A method of making Co3O4 nanorods by thermal decomposition of a cobalt salt is described. A method of using Co3O4 nanorods as an electrocatalyst component to a porous carbon electrode is also described. The carbon electrode may be made of carbonized filter paper. Together, this carbon-supported Co3O4 electrode may be used for water electrolysis.
Claims20
A method for making Co3O4 nanorods, the method comprising:
- heating at least one of Co(NO3)2 and Co(NO3)2.6H2O in air for 1-6 h at a temperature of 420-700° C. to produce Co3O4 nanorods by thermal decomposition,
- wherein the Co3O4 nanorods have an average diameter of 10-70 nm and an average length of 20-100 nm.
A carbon-supported Co3O4 electrode, comprising:
- carbonized paper and
- Co3O4 nanorods having an average diameter of 10-70 nm and an average length of 20-100 nm, deposited on the carbonized paper,
- wherein the carbon-supported Co3O4 electrode is substantially free of Co0.
