Abstract
Described herein are methods for the bromine-facilitated synthesis of fluoro-sulfur compounds, that include SF4, SF5Cl, SF5Br and SF6. The methods described herein generally require lower temperature and pressure, produce higher yields, require less time, do not use corrosive or costly reactants and solvents that are commonly used in the synthesis of the fluoro-sulfur compounds, and do not produce deleterious waste products when compared to previously-used methods.

A method of producing SF4 comprising:
- admixing Br2;
- a metal fluoride comprising KF, and a sulfur reactant selected from S, S2Cl2, SCl2, S2Br2, SBr2, or a combination thereof, wherein the sulfur reactant, the metal fluoride, and the Br2 react at temperatures from about 10° C. to about 115° C.
A method of producing SF4 comprising:
- admixing Br2, a metal fluoride comprising KF, and a sulfur reactant selected from S, S2Cl2, SCl2, S2Br2, SBr2, or a combination thereof, wherein the sulfur reactant, the metal fluoride, and the Br2 react at temperatures from about 10° C. to about 115° C. and the admixture produces SF4 without adding other reaction solvents to the admixture.
A method of producing SF4 comprising:
- admixing Br2, a metal fluoride comprising KF and a sulfur reactant selected from S, S2Cl2, SCl2, S2Br2, SBr2, or a combination thereof.
