Abstract
Described herein are recognition modules that bind specifically to a template nucleic acid and which ligate together in a reducing environment to produce a gamma peptide nucleic acid (γPNA) oligomer. Also provided are methods of synthesizing a γPNA oligomer on a template using the recognition modules.

1-40. (canceled)
A gamma peptide nucleic acid (PNA) comprising a plurality of units, wherein each unit comprises a gamma carbon atom and a nucleobase, wherein the gamma carbon atom is attached to an amino acid side chain, wherein at least one nucleobase of the plurality of units is a non-natural nucleobase.
A compound comprising a sequence of 3-8 peptide nucleic acid (PNA) residues, wherein each nucleic acid residue independently comprises:
- a) a nucleobase group;
- b) a gamma carbon atom;
- and c) an amino acid side chain pendant to the gamma carbon atom,
- wherein:
- i) the nucleobase group of one of the peptide nucleic acid residues is a guanine group;
- ii) the nucleobase group of one of the peptide nucleic acid residues is a thymine group;
- and
- iii) the nucleobase group of one of the peptide nucleic acid residues is:
- or a pharmaceutically-acceptable salt thereof.
