Abstract
The present invention includes a method of controlling an oil spill through introduction of a plurality of magnetizable particles into the oil spill in an amount sufficient to form a colloidal mixture. An absorbent is, also introduced into the oil spill to form an absorbent mixture. A magnetic field can be applied to the system to move, manipulate, or otherwise control the absorbent mixture in response to movement of the magnetic field.
Claims20
A method of controlling an oil spill which comprises the steps of:
- introducing a plurality of electrolytic iron oxide particles into the oil spill in an amount sufficient to form a colloidal mixture:
- introducing an absorbent into the oil spill to form an, absorbent mixture with the colloidal mixture;
- applying a magnetic field to the absorbent mixture;
- and
- moving the absorbent mixture in response to movement of the magnetic field,
A method of using magnetizable particles for controlling oil disposed at a surface, the method comprising:
- adding a premixed combination of magnetizable particles and an absorbent to the oil in an amount sufficient to form an absorbent mixture;
- introducing a magnetic field to the absorbent fixture:
- and
- raising the absorbent mixture away from the surface in response to the magnetic field
An electromagnetic skimmer for removing an absorbent mixture from water, comprising:
- a central body having a proximal end portion disposed at the water and a distal end portion extending upwardly away from the water;
- an electric dipole magnetic disposed at the proximal end portion for magnetically removing the absorbent mixture from the water:
- a rotating outer belt disposed about the central body for carrying the absorbent mixture toward the distal end portion;
- and
- a magnetic belt having a plurality of magnets disposed interior to the rotating outer belt.
