Abstract
Systems and methods for monitoring sleep are disclosed. According to an aspect, a method includes emitting light into tissue. The method also includes detecting light backscattered from the tissue. Further, the method includes determining a sleep pattern based on the backscattered light.
Claims30
A system for sleep event control, the system comprising:
- a wireless smart bandage including
- a light source configured to emit light into tissue,
- a light detector configured to detect light backscattered from the tissue and send a signal representative of the backscattered light,
- a transceiver,
- a memory;
- and
- a controller comprising an electronic processor, the controller communicatively coupled to the light source, the light detector, the transceiver, and the memory, the memory storing instructions that when executed by the electronic processor configure the controller to
- control the light source to emit the light into tissue,
- receive the signal representative of the back scattered light from the light detector,
- determine hemodynamic parameters of a brain based on the backscattered light signal,
- perform sleep pattern analysis of a user wearing the wireless smart bandage based on the cerebral hemodynamic parameters of the brain,
- identify a sleep event of the user wearing the wireless smart bandage, and
- transmit an output signal to an external device in response to the detection of the sleep event.

A method for sleep event control, the method comprising:
- controlling, by an electronic controller of a wireless smart bandage, a light source of the wireless smart bandage to emit light into tissue;
- receiving, by the electronic controller of the wireless smart bandage, a signal representative of back scattered light from a light detector of the wireless smart bandage;
- determining, by the electronic controller of the wireless smart bandage, hemodynamic parameters of a brain based on the backscattered light signal;
- performing, by the electronic controller of the wireless smart bandage, a sleep pattern analysis based on the hemodynamic parameters of the brain;
- identifying, by the electronic controller of the wireless smart bandage, a sleep event of a user wearing the wireless smart bandage;
- and
- transmitting, by the electronic controller of the wireless smart bandage, an output signal to an external device in response to the identified sleep event.

A system for treating a user, the system comprising:
- a wireless smart bandage including
- a light source configured to emit light into tissue,
- a light detector configured to detect light backscattered from the tissue and send a signal representative of the backscattered light;
- a transceiver,
- a memory, and
- a controller comprising an electronic processor, the controller communicatively coupled to the light source, the light detector, the transceiver, and the memory, the memory storing instructions that when executed by the electronic processor configure the controller to
- control the light source to emit the light into tissue,
- receive the signal representative of the back scattered light from the light detector,
- determine hemodynamic parameters of a brain of a user wearing the wireless smart bandage based on the backscattered light signal,
- determine a sleep metric of the user based on the hemodynamic parameters, and
- transmit an output signal from the transceiver of the wireless smart bandage to control an external device for treating the user.
