Abstract
Method of inhibiting live grazing organisms in an algae composition are disclosed, which do not inhibit the algae. In certain embodiments the concentration of algae increases. In other embodiments the mortality of live grazing organisms is complete. The method contacts an algae composition with wastewater comprising free ammonia and maintaining pH of at least 8 for more than two hours.
Claims19
A method of inhibiting live grazing organisms in an algae composition without inhibiting said algae in said composition, the method comprising,
- i) contacting said composition with wastewater comprising free ammonia;
- ii) maintaining pH of at least 8 for more than two hours;
- and
- iii) inhibiting said grazing pests without inhibition of said algae.
A method of inhibiting rotifer in an algae composition and increasing concentration of algae in said composition, the method comprising,
- i) contacting said composition with wastewater comprising free ammonia;
- and
- ii) maintaining pH of at least 8 for six to 12 hours;
- and
- iii) inhibiting said rotifer and increasing concentration of said algae.
A method of reducing algae production costs, the method comprising,
- i) contacting said composition with wastewater comprising free ammonia;
- ii) maintaining pH of at least 8 for more than two hours;
- and
- iii) inhibiting said grazing pests without inhibition of said algae, without the need to contact said composition with chemicals or additional ammonia.
A composition having increased algae biomass and reduced live grazing organism density, the composition comprising algae biomass and wastewater comprising free ammonia, said wastewater having been contacted with said algae for more than two hours at a pH of at least 8, said composition comprising increased algae biomass and reduced live grazing organism density compared to a composition said algae biomass and not comprising said wastewater.
