## Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention provide a method for generating a video thumbnail on an electronic device and an electronic device. The method includes: receiving a play instruction from a user and displaying a played video on a screen of the electronic device; displaying, below the played video, a preview image corresponding to each video frame of the video; and after receiving a preview image selected by the user, generating a video thumbnail based on a video frame corresponding to the preview image. The embodiments of the present invention are applicable to the field of multimedia technologies.

## Claims

### Claim at position 1

1-22. (canceled)

### Claim 23

A method, comprising:
receiving, by an electronic device, a play instruction from a user,
displaying, by the electronic device, a video being played on a touchscreen of the electronic device;
detecting, by the electronic device, a knuckle operation on the touchscreen;
in response to detecting the knuckle operation, determining, by the electronic device, a target frame of the video corresponding to the knuckle operation; and
generating, by the electronic device, a video thumbnail of the video based on the target frame.

### Claim 24 (depends on 23)

The method according to claim 23, wherein determining the target frame corresponding to the knuckle operation comprises:
capturing and displaying 2N+1 video frames, wherein the 2N+1 video frames comprise a first video frame obtained when the knuckle operation is identified, N consecutive video frames prior to the first video frame, and N consecutive video frames following the first video frame, and wherein N is a positive integer;
receiving information of a second video frame selected by the user, wherein the second video frame selected by the user is comprised in the 2N+1 video frames; and
determining, as the target frame of the video corresponding to the knuckle operation, the second video frame selected by the user.

### Claim 25 (depends on 23)

The method according to claim 23, wherein determining the target frame of the video corresponding to the knuckle operation comprises:
determining a first video frame of the video that is being played when the knuckle operation is detected; and
determining, as the target frame of the video corresponding to the knuckle operation, the first video frame that is being played when the knuckle operation is identified.

### Claim 26 (depends on 23)

The method according to claim 23, wherein determining the target frame of the video corresponding to the knuckle operation comprises:
pausing the video;
determining a first video frame selected by the user when the user performs a frame-based drag operation on the video; and
determining, as the target frame of the video corresponding to the knuckle operation, the first video frame selected by the user.

### Claim 27 (depends on 26)

The method according to claim 26, wherein generating the video thumbnail based on the target frame comprises:
storing the target frame in a storage area of a folder corresponding to the video, to obtain the video thumbnail.

### Claim 28

An electronic device, comprising:
an input device;
a touchscreen; and
a processor;
wherein the input device is configured to receive a play instruction from a user;
wherein the touchscreen is configured to display a played video; and
wherein the processor is configured to:
detect a knuckle operation on the touchscreen;
determine a target frame corresponding to the knuckle operation in response to detecting the knuckle operation; and
generate a video thumbnail based on the target frame.

### Claim 29 (depends on 28)

The electronic device according to claim 28, wherein the processor being configured to determine the target frame corresponding to the knuckle operation comprises the processor being configured to:
capture and display 2N+1 video frames, wherein the 2N+1 video frames comprise a first video frame obtained when the knuckle operation is detected, N consecutive video frames prior to the first video frame, and N consecutive video frames following the first video frame, and wherein N is a positive integer;
receive, using the input device, information of a second video frame selected by the user, wherein the second video frame selected by the user is one of the 2N+1 video frames; and
determine, as the target frame corresponding to the knuckle operation, the second video frame selected by the user.

### Claim 30 (depends on 28)

The electronic device according to claim 28, wherein the processor being configured to determine the target frame corresponding to the knuckle operation comprises the processor being configured to:
determine a first video frame of the video that is being played when the knuckle operation is detected; and
determine, as the target frame corresponding to the knuckle operation, the first video frame that is being played when the knuckle operation is detected.

### Claim 31 (depends on 28)

The electronic device according to claim 28, wherein the processor being configured to determine a target frame corresponding to the knuckle operation comprises the processor is configured to:
pause the video;
receive, using the input device, a first video frame selected by the user when the user performs a frame-based drag operation on the video; and
determine, as the target frame corresponding to the knuckle operation, the first video frame selected by the user.

### Claim 32 (depends on 31)

The electronic device according to claim 31, wherein the processor being configured to generate the video thumbnail based on the target frame comprises the processor being configured to:
store the target frame in a storage area of a folder corresponding to the video, to obtain the video thumbnail.

### Claim 33

A mobile phone, comprising:
a touchscreen;
one or more processors; and
a non-transitory memory configured to store instructions that are executable by the one or more processors, wherein the instructions comprise instructions for:
displaying a video that is currently being played on the touchscreen, wherein the video comprises a first video thumbnail which is displayable on the touchscreen;
detecting a gesture on a portion of the touchscreen that is displaying the video;
in response to the detecting the gesture, pausing the video, and displaying one or more video frames of the video on the touchscreen above a progress bar;
determining a first video frame from the one or more video frames of the video in response to detecting a selection operation by a user; and
updating the first video thumbnail of the video using the determined first video frame.

### Claim 34 (depends on 33)
