## Abstract

A method and apparatus for operating a power distribution system includes a power converter adapted to receive a power supply and convert the power supply to a power output, a set of solid state switching elements connected with the power output, a set of sensors adapted to sense a power demand at the set of solid state switching elements, and a controller module communicatively connected with the set of sensors and the set of solid state switching elements.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of operating a power distribution system defining a power demand threshold, comprising:
receiving, in a controller module, a set of power demands from a respective set of solid state switching elements, the set of power demands representative of a quantity of energy expected to be delivered by the respective solid state switching element;
comparing, in the controller module, the set of power demands with the power demand threshold of the power distribution system;
determining a set of energy budgets for the set of solid state switching elements based on the comparison; and
providing the set of energy budgets to the set of solid state switching elements, wherein the set of solid state switching elements are operable to limit the maximum quantity of energy delivered in accordance with the respective energy budget.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 wherein the set of power demands are representative of a quantity of energy expected to be delivered by the respective solid state switching element in a predetermined period of time.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2 wherein the receiving, comparing, determining, and providing are repeated for each subsequent period of time.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 wherein the power demand threshold is defined by a threshold quantity of power convertible by a power converter.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 wherein the providing the set of energy budgets includes providing at least a subset of energy budgets that meet a corresponding subset of power demands.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The method of claim 5 wherein, when the set of power demands satisfies the power demand threshold, the determining the set of energy budgets includes altering at least another subset of energy budgets that do not meet a corresponding subset of power demands.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6 wherein the altering includes altering the at least another subset of energy budgets based on at least one of criticality of an energy-consuming electrical load, or a predetermined priority of energy-consuming electrical loads.

### Claim 8 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6 wherein the altering includes altering the at least another subset of energy budgets based on further instruction from another system controller module.

### Claim 9 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6 wherein the controller module receives a larger power demand for a subsequent period of time, from at least one of a subset of solid state switching elements operating in accordance with the corresponding altered subset of energy budgets.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 wherein the receiving the set of power demands further includes receiving a status report data from the respective set of solid state switching elements, and further comprising comparing the status report data with a set of predictive failure conditions.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The method of claim 10, further comprising determining at least one of an over temperature condition or an excessive current condition, based on the comparison of the status report data with the set of predictive failure conditions, and in response to a determination of at least one of an over temperature condition or an excessive current condition exists, altering the energy budget of the respective solid state switching element, wherein the altering the energy budget reduces a likelihood of long term failure of the respective solid state switching element.

### Claim 12

A power distribution system, comprising:
a power converter adapted to receive a power supply and convert the power supply to a power output;
a set of solid state switching elements connected with the power output and adapted to generate a set of power demands representative of a quantity of energy expected to be delivered by the respective solid state switching element; and
a controller module communicatively connected with the set of solid state switching elements;
wherein the controller module is adapted to receive the set of power demands, compare the set of power demands with a power demand threshold of the power converter, determine a set of energy budgets for the set of solid state switching elements based on the comparison, and provide the set of energy budgets to the set of solid state switching elements, wherein the set of solid state switching elements are operable to limit the maximum quantity of energy delivered in accordance with the respective energy budget.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The power distribution system of claim 12 wherein the power demand threshold is a current demand threshold.

### Claim 14 (depends on 12)

The power distribution system of claim 12 wherein when the set of power demands satisfies the power demand threshold, the controller module is adapted to alter at least a subset of energy budgets that do not meet a corresponding subset of power demands.

### Claim 15

A method of operating a power distribution system defining a power demand threshold, comprising:
supplying, from a set of solid state power controllers, a set of power demands representative of a quantity of energy expected to be delivered by the respective solid state power controllers;
comparing, in a controller module receiving the supplied set of power demands, the set of power demands with the power demand threshold of the power distribution system;
upon satisfying the comparison, determining, in the controller module, a set of energy budgets for the set of solid state power controllers based on the comparison wherein at least a subset of the energy budgets are less than the a respective subset of power demands; and
