## Abstract

The present disclosure generally provides topically applicable insect repelling compositions, and in some embodiments, topically applicable insect repelling and UV protecting compositions. The compositions comprise a polymerization product of a polyol, a diisocyanate and at least one insect-repelling compound. The resulting polymers advantageously bond superficially to skin or hair, thereby localizing repellents and preventing systemic absorption. While not being bound by theory, it is believed that the localization of repellants to the surface of the skin renders them safer, wherein such repellents are not vaporized and do not have a disagreeable odor. The repellants advantageously interact with tactile insect activity, thereby preventing parasitic activity, such as drawing blood or the communication of pathogens.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A topical insect repellent composition comprising:
i) a polymerization product of a polyol, a diisocyanate and at least one insect-repelling compound, and
ii) a carrier in an amount suitable for application to the skin or hair.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1, wherein the polyol is an amphiphilic block copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide, wherein each block contains 10 to 60 carbon atoms.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1, wherein the polymerization product comprises an NCO weight fraction of less than 20% of the total weight.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1, wherein the polymerization product is a multi-armed polymer, wherein at least one arm comprises a terminal NCO group, and at least two other arms comprise the insect-repelling compound.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The composition of claim 4, wherein the multi-armed polymer is a three-armed polymer.

### Claim 6 (depends on 4)

The composition of claim 4, wherein between 25 and 45% of the arms in the polymerization product are bonded to an alcohol obtained from citronella oil, between 25 and 45% of the arms are bonded to an alcohol obtained from lemon eucalyptus oil, and between 0 and 10% of the arms are bonded to an alcohol obtained from neem oil.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1, wherein the polyol is a polymerization product of trimethylolpropane, diisocyanate and a poloxamer, such that the product is a polyol comprising 3 arms of poloxamer bonded to one trimethylolpropane.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1, having a molecular weight between 1000 and 20,000 Dalton.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1, comprising at least one terminal NCO group capable of bonding to skin, thereby preventing penetration of the insect repellent molecule into the deeper layers of the skin.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1 wherein the polymerization product (i) bonds to skin via a covalent bond formed between the terminal NCO groups and the skin.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1, wherein the polymerization product further comprises an ultra violet absorbing compound.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1 wherein the carrier comprises a free insect repellent and a skin emollient.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The composition of claim 12, wherein the free insect repellent is selected from the group consisting of i) a synthetic insect repellent, ii) a natural insect repellent and iii) combinations thereof.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The composition of claim 13, wherein the synthetic insect repellant comprises DEET.

### Claim 15
