A secondary battery, comprising:
- an aqueous electrolyte;
- a positive electrode;
- and
- a negative electrode, a compound comprising an element A being present on at least a part of a surface of the negative electrode, the element A being at least one selected from the group consisting of Hg, Pb, Zn, and Bi, and, according to scanning electron microscopy, a region where the compound comprising the element A is present accounting for 50% or more of the surface of the negative electrode.
