Integrated disposition for file retention management

A system, comprising:

• at least one processor;
• and
• at least one memory in communication with the at least one processor, the at least one memory having computer-readable instructions stored thereupon that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:
• receive, from a computing device, a request to define one or more filter parameters for activation of a file management label;
• generate, based on the request, graphical user interface data usable to render a graphical user interface that includes at least one user interface element (UIE) operable to enable selection of a file retention period and a file purge age for the file management label;
• instantiate an abstraction layer configured to present a standard interface for a plurality of applications to communicate file status information;
• generate a record that is immutably attached to a file associated with the file management label, the file generated using one of the plurality of applications;
• updating the record with information received via the standard interface from the application that created the file, the information pertaining to a changed status of the file;
• in response to a command to delete the file, determining whether to confirm deletion of the file based on one or more data retention policies indicated by the file management label;
• updating the record to indicate a reason for the deletion and a source of the delete command when the delete command is confirmed;
• and
• updating the record to indicate a reason for denying the deletion and the source of the delete command when it is determined that the delete command is not confirmed.

A computer-readable storage medium having computer-executable instructions stored thereupon which, when executed by one or more processors of one or more computing devices, cause the computing devices to:

• receive a request to delete a content item from at least one storage device associated with at least one productivity platform;
• in response to the request, deny the request when deletion of the content item violates a data retention policy for the content item;
• in response to the request, granting the request when deletion of the content item is consistent with the data retention policy for the content item;
• and
• updating a record associated with the content item to indicate a reason for granting or denying the deletion and a source of the request, wherein the record is immutably associated with the content item.
