Abstract
Systems and methods for producing controlled vibrations within a borehole. In one example, the system includes a movement mechanism and a controller. The movement mechanism is configured to enable translational movement of a first surface relative to a second surface to allow the first surface to impact the second surface to produce a plurality of beats. The frequency and amplitude of the beats may be selectively controlled by suppressing or dampening the beats. The controller is configured to selectively control an amplitude or frequency of the beats to encode information therein, where the amplitude of a beat may be selectively controlled by dampening or suppressing the impact of the first surface and the second surface.

A method of transmitting information from a borehole, comprising:
- providing, in the borehole, an anvil member with a first surface, wherein the first surface comprises a plurality of protrusions;
- providing, in the borehole, an encoder plate member with a second surface, wherein the second surface comprises a second plurality of protrusions and wherein the first surface and the second surface oppose one another,
- providing a controller to control the movement of either or both of the anvil plate member and the encoder plate member with respect to one another,
- generating a selective plurality of beats per unit time when the first surface and the second surface impact one another;
- responsive to data received by the controller, selectively suppressing one or more of the plurality of beats per unit time to encode information in the plurality of beats.
A system for encoding and transmitting information in a borehole, the system comprising:
- an anvil plate located in a borehole and comprising a first surface;
- an encoder plate located in a borehole and comprising a second surface, wherein the first surface and the second surface oppose each other, and
- a controller configured to selectively control the movement of either or both of the anvil plate and the encoder plate relative to each other, wherein, responsive to data received by the controller, the controller is configured to selectively control either or both of the frequency and the force of a plurality of impacts of the first surface and the second surface, and wherein a plurality of beats are generated with either or both of a selected frequency and a selected amplitude when the first surface and the second surface impact one another, thereby encoding information in the plurality of beats.
A method of transmitting information from a borehole during drilling, comprising:
- providing, in a borehole, an anvil member with a first surface;
- providing, in the borehole, an encoder plate member with a second surface, wherein the first surface and the second surface oppose one another;
- and
- providing a controller to control the movement of either or both of the anvil plate member and the encoder plate member with respect to one another, wherein the controller, responsive to an input, controls the movement of either or both of the anvil plate member and the encoder plate member to generate a plurality of beats per unit time when the first surface and the second surface impact one another, and, responsive to data received by the controller, selectively suppresses one or more of the plurality of beats to encode information in the plurality of beats.
A system for encoding data while drilling a borehole, comprising:
- a first mechanical mass;
- a second mechanical mass, wherein the first mass and the second mass are located in a borehole and are adapted to impact against each other with a plurality of impacts to thereby create an acoustic signal;
- and
- a control system configured to selectively arrest or dampen one or more of the plurality of impacts to thereby encode data into the acoustic signal.
