Abstract
A composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity and a compound represented by formula (I) wherein: R1 and R2 are each independently a hydrocarbyl group containing from about 4 to about 18 carbon atoms; p and q are each independently 0 or an integer from 1 to 3, and the sum of p and q is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. The composition is effective at swelling seals.
Claims26
A composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity and a compound represented by formula (I)
- wherein:
- R1 and R2 are each independently a hydrocarbyl group containing from about 4 to about 18 carbon atoms;
- p and q are each independently 0 or an integer from 1 to 3, and the sum of p and q is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6.
The composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the oil of lubricating viscosity is a Group II, Group III, Group IV or Gas-to-Liquid (Fischer-Tropsch) base oil, or mixture thereof.
The composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the composition comprises one or more components selected from the group of dispersants, detergents, metal salts of a phosphorus acid, friction modifiers, viscosity modifiers and antioxidants.
The composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the composition is a lubricant for a driveline device or an internal combustion engine.
A method of swelling an elastomer seal when in contact with a lubricating composition, said method comprising employing in said lubricating composition a compound represented by formula (I)
- wherein:
- R1 and R2 are each independently a hydrocarbyl group containing from about 4 to about 18 carbon atoms;
- p and q are each independently 0 or an integer from 1 to 3, and the sum of p and q is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6, with the oil of lubricating viscosity.
Use of a compound represented by formula (I)
- wherein:
- R1 and R2 are each independently a hydrocarbyl group containing from about 4 to about 18 carbon atoms;
- p and q are each independently 0 or an integer from 1 to 3, and the sum of p and q is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6, as a seal swell agent in a lubricating composition.
