Abstract
A fire suppression system may include a tank and a manifold in the tank. The tank, when charged, holds a liquid pressurized with a gas. The manifold has an inlet coupled to receive a liquid flow from a lower portion of the tank and inlets configured to receive gas flows from a upper portion of the tank. An expansion chamber in the manifold receives the liquid flow and the gas flows, which create a liquid-gas vortex that produces foam.
Claims16
A fire suppression system comprising:
- a tank holding a liquid pressurized with a gas;
- and
- a manifold disposed in the tank, the manifold including:
- an expansion chamber;
- a first inlet coupled to receive a liquid flow from a first portion of the tank and direct the liquid flow into the expansion chamber;
- a second inlet configured to receive a first gas flow from a second portion of the tank and direct the first gas flow into the expansion chamber;
- and
- a third inlet configured to receive a second gas flow from the second portion of the tank and direct the second gas flow into the expansion chamber, the third inlet being upstream from the second inlet along a direction of the liquid flow, wherein
- the first gas flow and the second gas flow are oriented relative to each other and relative to the liquid flow to create in the expansion chamber a liquid-gas vortex that produces foam.
