Abstract
A friction clutch mechanism for a steering column of a vehicle is disclosed.
Claims19
Friction clutch mechanism for a steering column of a vehicle comprising:
- a sleeve positioned around a steering shaft of the steering column, the sleeve having a firstend and a second end and a plurality of threads being positioned on the second end;
- a lock collar positioned on the sleeve, the lock collar having an outer surface, a plurality of locking teeth positioned on the outer surface;
- a friction washer positioned on the sleeve adjacent a second end of the lock collar;
- a lock nut positioned on the plurality of threads on the second end, the lock nut disposed to engage a side of the lock washer that is spaced apart from the lock collar, the lock nut engaging the second friction washer to place a biasing force against the friction washer, the biasing force causing the friction washer to engage the lock collar with a predetermined force;
- and
- an engagement device for engaging the teeth on the lock collar to prevent the lock collar from rotating until the biasing force placed on the lock collar by the friction washer is exceeded.

Friction clutch mechanism for a steering column of a vehicle, the steering column including a steering shaft comprising:
- a shoulder positioned on the steering shaft,
- a spring positioned on the steering shaft, one end of the spring engaging the shoulder,
- a first friction wedge positioned on the steering shaft, the end of the spring spaced apart from the shoulder engaging one end of the first friction wedge,
- a lock collar positioned on the steering shaft, the lock collar having a plurality of teeth position on an outer surface of the lock collar;
- a second friction wedge positioned on the steering shaft, the first and second friction wedges engaging the lock collar to position the lock collar on the steering shaft;
- a no-back washer having a plurality of engagement teeth position on the steering shaft adjacent the second friction washer, the engagement teeth engaging the steering shaft to position the spring, first and second friction wedges and the lock collar in the desired position on the steering shaft, the no-back washer compressing the spring to place a biasing force against the first and second friction wedges, and the lock collar;
- an engagement device for engaging the teeth on the lock collar to prevent the lock collar from rotating until the biasing force placed on the lock collar by the spring is exceeded.

Friction clutch mechanism for a steering column of a vehicle, the steering column having a steering shaft comprising:
- a shoulder positioned on the steering shaft;
- a friction plate placed positioned on the steering shaft, one side of the friction plate engaging the shoulder;
- a lock collar having a plurality of teeth on an outer surface rotatable positioned on the steering shaft, one end of the lock collar positioned against the side of the friction plate that is spaced apart from the shoulder;
- a spring positioned on the steering shaft, one end of the spring engaging the end of back collar that is spaced apart from the friction plate;
- a no-back washer having a plurality of engagement teeth position on the steering shaft, one side of the no-back washer engaging the end of the spring that is spaced apart from the lock collar, the no-back washer compressing the spring to place a biasing force against the lock collar and friction plate,
- an engagement device for engaging the teeth on the lock collar to prevent the lock collar from rotating until the biasing force placed on the lock collar by the spring is exceeded.
