## Abstract

Some embodiments of the invention provide a method for displaying a map. The method provides a first display area to display a map, and a second display area to overlap a portion of the first display area to display (i) a field to receive a search parameter and (ii) a set of predicted locations to view on the map. The second display area is moveable over the first display area in order to decrease its size to allow a larger portion of the map to be displayed in the first display area, or to increase its size to allow a larger number of predicted locations to be displayed in the second display area. In some embodiments, the second display area overlaps a bottom portion of the first display area. In some embodiments, the method is implemented by a map application that executes on a mobile device. The set of predicted locations displayed in the second display area in some embodiments include addresses harvested from applications executing on the mobile device. Examples of such applications include electronic mail applications, text messaging applications, the map application, ticket applications, restaurant reservation applications, social media applications, real estate applications, etc. The set of predicted locations includes in some embodiments addresses associated with previous destinations traveled to by the mobile device.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of displaying predicted destinations on a mobile device, the method implemented by the mobile device, the method comprising:
receiving by a mapping application, from an operating system of the mobile device, a request for predicted destinations for a notification display area of the operating system;
identifying, by the mapping application, a highest ranked predicted destination from a predicted destination list;
generating, by the mapping application, for the notification display area, a predicted location output display; and
without displaying the mapping application, causing, by the mapping application, the notification display area of the operating system to present the predicted location output display including the highest ranked predicted destination.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the operating system provides a first affordance to view the notification display area without opening of the map application.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the device is a mobile device, and the first affordance is accessible through a display page of the mobile device that is generated by the operating system of the device.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3, wherein the display page is the home page of the mobile device.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The method of claim 4, wherein the display page is displayed on a touch-sensitive display screen of the mobile device, and the first affordance is a swipe gesture on the touch-sensitive display screen.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
in the notification display area, displaying a condensed list of predicted destinations with associated destination information;
upon selection of the condensed list, displaying an expanded list that provides additional information about at least two predicted destinations.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein causing the notification display area to present the predicted location output display further comprises:
generating the predicted location output display to include a second affordance; and
in response to an input on the second affordance, replacing the display of the highest ranked predicted destination with additional information about at least two predicted destinations.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
extracting, by the mapping application, from the request received from the operating system, a first size and a first identity of the notification display area of the operating system;
limiting, by the mapping application the predicted destination list based on the first size;
generating a limited predicted destination list that corresponds to the first size; and
causing, by the mapping application, the notification display area of the operating system to present the limited predicted destination list.

### Claim 9

A non-transitory machine readable medium storing a program for execution by at least one processing unit of a mobile device, the program comprising sets of instructions for:
receiving by a mapping application, from an operating system of the mobile device, a request for predicted destinations for a notification display area of the operating system;
identifying, by the mapping application, a highest ranked predicted destination from a predicted destination list;
generating, by the mapping application, for the notification display area, a predicted location output display; and
without displaying the mapping application, causing, by the mapping application, the notification display area of the operating system to present the predicted location output display including the highest ranked predicted destination.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 9, wherein the program further comprises sets of instructions for, wherein the operating system provides a first affordance to view the notification display area without opening of the map application.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 10, wherein the device is a mobile device, and the first affordance is accessible through a display page of the mobile device that is generated by the operating system of the device.

### Claim 12 (depends on 9)

The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 9, wherein the display page is displayed on a touch-sensitive display screen of the mobile device, and the first affordance is a swipe gesture on the touch-sensitive display screen.

### Claim 13 (depends on 9)

The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 9, wherein the program further comprises sets of instructions for:
in the notification display area, displaying a condensed list of predicted destinations with associated destination information;
upon selection of the condensed list, displaying an expanded list that provides additional information about at least two predicted destinations.

### Claim 14 (depends on 9)

The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 9, wherein the program further comprises sets of instructions for:
generating the predicted location output display to include a second affordance; and
in response to an input on the second affordance, replacing the display of the highest ranked predicted destination with additional information about at least two predicted destinations.

### Claim 15 (depends on 9)

The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 9, wherein the program further comprises sets of instructions for:
extracting, by the mapping application, from the request received from the operating system, a first size and a first identity of the notification display area of the operating system;
limiting, by the mapping application the predicted destination list based on the first size;
