A medicament for treating a human patient for tissue damage resulting from the administration of radiation therapy or chemotherapy to the patient, wherein the medicament is characterized by parenterally administering to the patient at least 75 mg of a superoxide dismutase mimetic within a period of 60 minutes, wherein the superoxide dismutase mimetic corresponds to Formula (GC4419):
- wherein X and Y are independently neutral or negatively-charged ligands.
