Abstract
A surgical bur is disclosed having cutting and trailing edges and associated flutes and lands. Each flute includes a cutting edge. Each of the trailing edges relatives in a selected dimension to a preceding cutting edge.
Claims19
A method of dissecting a tissue generally in a radial direction from a center axis of a surgical bur, the method comprising:
- powering a motor to rotationally drive the surgical bur around the center axis of the surgical bur;
- moving the surgical bur in a radial direction from the center axis;
- and
- engaging a front wall of a dissected channel with a trailing edge of the surgical bur prior to engaging the front wall with a cutting edge of the surgical bur;
- wherein the surgical bur is configured to cut smoothly into the front wall.

A method of dissecting a tissue generally in a radial direction from a center axis of a surgical bur, the method comprising:
- powering a motor to rotate the surgical bur around the center axis of the surgical bur;
- moving the rotating surgical bur in a radial direction from the center axis toward the tissue;
- engaging a front wall of the tissue with a trailing edge of the surgical bur;
- and
- engaging a cutting edge of the surgical bur to the tissue after engaging the trailing edge of the surgical bur to the tissue;
- wherein the trailing edge and the cutting edge of the surgical bur are each a same distance from the center axis of the surgical bur to reduce vibration of the surgical bur.
