Abstract
Described herein are cyanobacteria encapsulated in hydrogels. Also described herein are consortia that include encapsulated cyanobacteria and heterotrophic microbes. The encapsulated cyanobacteria can be autotrophic and can provide nutrients to the heterotrophic microbes, which can utilize the nutrients to grow and produce useful products.
Claims18
A cyanobacteria modified to express a sucrose/proton symporter where cells of the cyanobacteria are encapsulated in a hydrogel.
A consortium comprising a population of heterotrophic microbes and a population of the cyanobacterial cells, where the cyanobacterial cells are modified to express a sucrose/proton symporter, and where the cyanobacterial cells are encapsulated in a hydrogel.
A method comprising dripping a cyanobacteria cell/alginate suspension into a barium chloride curing solution to produce a population of encapsulated cyanobacteria.
