Abstract
Various solutions for maintaining a radio resource control (RRC) connection with respect to user equipment and network apparatus in mobile communications are described. An apparatus may establish an RRC connection with a network node. The apparatus may transmit a layer 2 packet to maintain the RRC connection after a period of time without data transmission. The apparatus may transmit uplink data via the RRC connection without re-establishing the RRC connection.

A method, comprising:
- establishing, by a processor of an apparatus, a radio resource control (RRC) connection with a network node;
- transmitting, by the processor, a layer 2 packet to maintain the RRC connection after a period of time without data transmission;
- and
- transmitting, by the processor, uplink data via the RRC connection without re-establishing the RRC connection.

- a transceiver capable of wirelessly communicating with a network node of a wireless network;
- and
- a processor communicatively coupled to the transceiver, the processor capable of:
- establishing, via the transceiver, a radio resource control (RRC) connection with the network node;
- transmitting, via the transceiver, a layer 2 packet to maintain the RRC connection after a period of time without data transmission;
- and
- transmitting, via the transceiver, uplink data via the RRC connection without re-establishing the RRC connection.
