Abstract

Methods, apparatuses, and embodiments related to streaming live video. A celebrity plans to live stream an interaction with a fan to a large number of her fans. The celebrity uses a device to capture and stream live video to her fans. The celebrity selects a fan and begins to interact with the fan, who uses a device to live stream a question. To enable a more natural interaction, the celebrity utilizes a platform with reduced latency of communication. With other platforms, latencies of between 6 to 30 seconds may occur in interactions between the celebrity and the fan. The platform utilizes one or more techniques to achieve reduced latency, such as not performing error checks on the live streamed data, not reordering packets while they are being relayed between devices, etc. A TCP tunnel that utilizes raw sockets is used to enable customized techniques for reducing communication latency.

Dependent claims

A method for streaming live video over a network with low latency, the method comprising:

receiving a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) request, by a server, from a sending device, to establish a network connection;
sending a HTTP request, by the server, to a receiving device, to establish a network connection;
receiving a request, by the server, from the sending device, to create a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) tunnel between the sending device and the server to enable live video acquired by the sending device to be streamed to the server, wherein the TCP tunnel enables live video to be streamed by using raw sockets to enable sending and receiving of Internet Protocol (IP) packets without any protocol-specific transport layer formatting;
sending a request, by the server, to the receiving device, to create a TCP tunnel between the server and the receiving device for streaming live video;
receiving a first plurality of IP packets, by the server, from the sending device, via the TCP tunnel between the sending device and the server, wherein each IP packet of the first plurality of IP packets includes live video data streamed at a first bitrate;
for each IP packet of the first plurality of IP packets:
transcoding the live streamed video data of said each IP packet from the first bitrate to a second bitrate without determining whether the live streamed video data includes any transmission errors and without reordering any of the first plurality of IP packets, wherein the transcoding of the first plurality of IP plackets creates a second plurality of IP packets that include second bitrate transcoded video data;
and
sending the second plurality of IP packets, by the server, to the receiving device, via the TCP tunnel between the server and the receiving device, wherein each IP packet of the second plurality of IP packets includes live video data at the second bitrate, and includes ordering data to enable the receiving device to reorder the second plurality of IP packets for display at the receiving device.

A method comprising:

receiving a request, by a server, to create a first Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) tunnel between a first device and the server for streaming live video, wherein the first TCP tunnel utilizes raw sockets;
sending a request, by the server, to create a second TCP tunnel between the server and a second device for streaming live video, wherein the second TCP tunnel utilizes raw sockets;
receiving a first plurality of IP packets, by the server, via the first TCP tunnel, wherein each IP packet of the first plurality of IP packets includes video data streamed live at a first bitrate and includes packet ordering data;
creating a second plurality of IP packets by transcoding the video data of the first plurality of IP packets from a first bitrate to a second bitrate, wherein, when the video data of an IP packet of the first plurality of IP packets includes particular data with an error due to transmission error, the video data of the IP packet is transcoded without correcting the error;
and
sending the second plurality of IP packets, by the server, to the second device, via the TCP tunnel between the server and the second device, wherein each IP packet of the second plurality of IP packets includes live video data at the second bitrate, and includes ordering data to enable the second device to reorder the second plurality of IP packets for display at the second device.

A computing system comprising:

a processor;
a networking interface coupled to the processor;
and
a memory coupled to the processor and storing instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the computing system to perform operations including:
receiving a request, via the networking interface, to create a first Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) tunnel between a first device and the computing system for streaming live video, wherein the first TCP tunnel utilizes raw sockets;
sending a request, via the networking interface, to create a second TCP tunnel between the computing system and a second device for streaming live video, wherein the second TCP tunnel utilizes raw sockets;
receiving a first plurality of IP packets, via the networking interface and the first TCP tunnel, wherein each IP packet of the first plurality of IP packets includes video data streamed live at a first bitrate and includes packet ordering data;
creating a second plurality of IP packets by transcoding the video data of the first plurality of IP packets from a first bitrate to a second bitrate, wherein, when the video data of an IP packet of the first plurality of IP packets includes particular data with an error due to transmission error, the video data of the IP packet is transcoded without correcting the error;
and
sending the second plurality of IP packets, via the networking interface, to the second device, via the TCP tunnel between the computing system and the second device, wherein each IP packet of the second plurality of IP packets includes live video data at the second bitrate, and includes ordering data to enable the second device to reorder the second plurality of IP packets for display at the second device.
